Ceramic coating vs wax: three classes of paint protection

By The RenderCar desk, Research and fact-checking · updated

Wax, synthetic sealant and ceramic coating are three different chemistries sold under one promise. Collinite publishes 4 to 7 months of weather protection for its No. 845 wax, and CARPRO publishes 2 to 5 years of durability for CQUARTZ UK 3.0. Both figures were read August 14, 2026.

The three classes, and the job each one does

Paint protection for cars splits into three chemistries, and the split is by how the layer attaches rather than by how it shines. Wax and its carnauba-polymer hybrids sit on the clear coat as a sacrificial film that softens with heat and leaves after enough wash cycles. Synthetic silica sealants bond more tightly and survive longer. Ceramic coatings cure into a semi-permanent layer that has to be polished off rather than washed off.

Every claim in the category descends from that single difference. A layer that washes away is quoted in months, a layer that cures is quoted in years, and the longest quotes in the category arrive with a professional installation requirement attached.

None of the three stops a stone. Impact resistance belongs to a thicker material with a different job, and the comparison of protection film against vinyl is where that line gets drawn.

The case for wax, made properly

Wax publishes the most honest number in the category and asks the least of the owner. Collinite lists 4 to 7 months of weather protection for No. 845 Insulator Wax and 7 to 10 months for No. 476s Super Doublecoat, describes both as carnauba and polymer blends, and states that minimal buffing is required, on product pages read August 14, 2026. Collinite names UV, rain, snow, salt, dust, dirt, grime, bugs and staining among what No. 845 shields against.

4 to 7 monthsWeather protection published by Collinite for No. 845 Insulator Wax, and 7 to 10 months for No. 476s Super Doublecoat. Both product pages read August 14, 2026.

Wax also fails gracefully, which is a property nobody markets. A worn wax layer leaves nothing behind that has to be removed, so the next application starts from a wash and a clay bar rather than from a machine polish. No part of the decision is irreversible.

The limits are equally plain. Wax offers little chemical resistance, so bird droppings and bug acid still reach the clear coat if they sit, and a published season of protection assumes normal exposure rather than a car parked outside through a road-salt winter. Reapplying two or three times a year is the real price of the low entry cost.

The 9H number points at a pencil, not at corundum

The 9H printed on ceramic coating packaging is a graphite pencil grade from a coatings laboratory test, not a position on the Mohs mineral scale. Elcometer, which manufactures coating hardness testers, states that the pencil hardness test, also referred to as the Wolff-Wilborn test, uses the varying hardness values of graphite pencils to evaluate a coating’s hardness, and that the lowest hardness value of the pencil which marks the coating determines the coating’s hardness rating. Read on Elcometer’s US site August 14, 2026.

The other scale belongs to geology and has nothing to do with paint. The National Park Service lists the Mohs Hardness Scale as talc at 1 rising through corundum at 9 to diamond at 10, and defines a mineral’s hardness as its relative resistance to scratching, measured by scratching it against another substance of known hardness. Read August 14, 2026.

Two scales, two nines. On the pencil scale, a nine is a graphite grade that failed to leave a mark. On the Mohs scale, a nine is corundum, the mineral one step below diamond. Sources read August 14, 2026.

Elcometer lists ASTM D 3363, ISO 15184 and JIS K 5600-5-4 among the standards its pencil hardness testers work to, and supplies the graded lead set in hardnesses 6H to 6B, read August 14, 2026. The range shipped with a laboratory instrument stops short of the figure printed on a retail box, which is worth knowing before paying a premium for that figure.

XPEL, a company that sells both film and coating and therefore has no reason to flatter either, states the practical consequence on its FAQ page read August 14, 2026: paint protection film is generally better at preventing physical damage like scratches and chips because of its thicker, impact-resistant layer, while ceramic coating excels at providing a hydrophobic surface that repels water, dirt and contaminants. A coating does not make clear coat stone-proof, and it does not replace protective film.

Gyeon supplies the tidiest illustration of the confusion by accident. Its long-life coating is literally named Q2 Mohs EVO, and the Gyeon USA product page publishes durability in months with no hardness rating anywhere on it, read August 14, 2026.

What each class promises, side by side

Three classes, three published lifespans, and three different lists of what the money does not buy. Every figure below was read from the manufacturer’s own product page on August 14, 2026.

ClassPublished lifeWhat it givesWhat it does not give
Carnauba-polymer wax4 to 7 months on Collinite No. 845, 7 to 10 on No. 476sGloss, UV and road-salt shielding, hand applicationChemical resistance, multi-year life, chip resistance
Silica spray sealantUp to 3 months stand-alone on CARPRO Reload 2.0Hydrophobicity, slickness, minutes of workLong life, correction of existing defects
Ceramic coating2 years on CQUARTZ Lite 2.0, 2 to 5 on CQUARTZ UK 3.0, up to 36 or 48 months on Gyeon Q2 Mohs EVOMulti-year hydrophobicity, chemical resistance, easier washingChip protection, swirl immunity, exemption from washing

The rightmost column is the one that decides purchases. Every row loses on impact, which means the choice between the three is about wash effort and reapplication frequency, not about whether the paint survives a gravel truck.

Preparation is where the money goes

A ceramic coating quote is mostly labor performed before the bottle is opened. CARPRO states that to gain the most from CQUARTZ the vehicle should have all surfaces 100 percent clean and paint polished to a high level, and calls removing leftover polishing oils with its Eraser product critical to ensure durability, read August 14, 2026. Any swirl left in the clear coat is sealed under a layer rated in years.

Wax asks for a smaller version of the same discipline. Collinite states that for above surface contamination a clay bar is almost always recommended in order to achieve proper bonding of a wax, on its FAQ page read August 14, 2026.

2 to 5 yearsDurability published by CARPRO for CQUARTZ UK 3.0, against 2 years for CQUARTZ Lite 2.0 and up to 48 months for two layers of Gyeon Q2 Mohs EVO. All read August 14, 2026.

Cure windows are the part owners underestimate. CARPRO asks for the surface to stay dry at least one hour after applying CQUARTZ UK 3.0 and for best results 24 hours, gives recommended working temperatures of 40F to 90F, and for CQUARTZ Lite 2.0 asks that water be wiped off gently during the first 24 hours, all read August 14, 2026. A coating applied the day before a rainstorm is a coating applied badly.

Ceramic does not remove washing, it changes what washing costs

Washing stays mandatory on a coated car, and the coating manufacturer is the one who says it loudest. CARPRO opens its CQUARTZ maintenance guide with the statement that washing regularly is the most important item, read August 14, 2026. The same guide, read the same day, asks for no soap wash for the first 5 days except to remove bugs, decontamination with IronX every 3 to 6 months, and a topper every 3 to 12 months.

What a coating changesContamination releases more easily, water sheets off instead of drying in place, and a wash takes less mechanical effort, which means fewer swirls introduced per wash. Chemical resistance is genuinely higher than wax, so a bird dropping caught the same day is less likely to leave a mark.
What a coating does not changeWash frequency, wash technique and decontamination intervals stay in the owner's hands. CARPRO still schedules IronX decontamination every 3 to 6 months and a topper every 3 to 12 months on a coated car, read August 14, 2026. Neglect still produces etching and swirls.

The honest framing is that a coating buys easier maintenance, not less of it. The finish itself sets a separate wash regime, which is covered in the comparison of matte, gloss and satin finishes.

When a ceramic coating is the wrong purchase

Three situations turn a coating into money spent on the wrong problem, and none of them is about the coating being bad.

The paint needs correction firstCARPRO asks for paint polished to a high level before CQUARTZ goes on, read August 14, 2026. On a car with heavy swirls or failing clear coat, the correction is the real invoice and the coating is a rounding error on top of it. Fixing the paint, or repainting, is the actual decision.
The car leaves within a yearA layer CARPRO rates at 2 to 5 years cannot pay back inside twelve months, and no buyer pays a premium for an unverifiable coating. A wax at 4 to 7 months, or a silica sealant at up to 3 months on CARPRO Reload 2.0, gives the same gloss for the listing photos at a fraction of the cost. All figures read August 14, 2026.
The car is garaged and barely drivenCoatings earn their keep against accumulated exposure: sun, salt, industrial fallout, repeated washing. A weekend car kept indoors accumulates almost none of that between outings, and the sealant class covers it while leaving every option open.

A fourth case is the one people arrive with. Someone worried about stone chips on a highway commute is asking a protection question that a coating cannot answer at any price, and the money belongs in film instead.

What the manufacturers decline to publish

Two well-known brands could not be verified for this page, and naming that is more useful than repeating a number from a search result. Gtechniq’s product and guarantee pages returned an access error to our automated check on August 14, 2026, so no Gtechniq guarantee length appears here, however widely its accredited-installer program is quoted elsewhere. Meguiar’s product pages timed out repeatedly the same day, so no Meguiar’s durability figure appears either.

One more gap runs the other way. Turtle Wax’s Hybrid Solutions Ceramic Spray Coating page asked for a 24-hour cure before a second coat but published no duration of protection in the product copy itself, read August 14, 2026.

The pattern is consistent across the category. Coating and wax makers publish durability willingly and publish hardness methodology almost never, which is exactly why the 9H figure travels so far without anyone checking which scale it came from.

Choosing by what the car is for

For a daily driver

Daily drivers make the strongest case for a ceramic coating, because the maintenance saving compounds over a car washed every week or two for years. Durability of 2 to 5 years, published by CARPRO for CQUARTZ UK 3.0 and read August 14, 2026, outlasts most ownership periods, and the easier wash reduces the swirl accumulation that ruins a daily’s finish faster than anything else does. Front-end chip protection remains a separate purchase.

For a car headed for resale

Cars going up for sale within a year favor wax or a silica sealant, since neither needs a cure window and both photograph the same as a coating. Collinite’s 4 to 7 months on No. 845 covers a listing period comfortably, read August 14, 2026, and CARPRO’s Reload 2.0 at up to 3 months stand-alone covers a faster sale. Spending on paint correction beats spending on the layer above it, and where the money goes in a full refinish is set out in what it costs to paint a car.

For a project or show car

Project cars are where the calculation flips toward the coating, because the surface is usually corrected already and the owner is protecting a finish that cost real money. Fresh paint has its own cure requirement before anything is layered on it, which the shop that sprayed it will specify. Sequencing protection against everything else on the build list is covered in the guide to choosing mods with taste, and the question of what film does to paint underneath is answered in the article on wrap removal and paint damage.

When the RenderCar app ships, previewing a finish on a photo of your own car will be a step people take before deciding what goes on top of it.

Questions people ask

Is a ceramic coating better than wax?
Ceramic coating lasts longer and wax costs less, and the published numbers show the gap. CARPRO lists CQUARTZ UK 3.0 at 2 to 5 years of durability and CQUARTZ Lite 2.0 at 2 years, while Collinite lists 4 to 7 months of weather protection for No. 845 wax. All three pages were read August 14, 2026.
What does 9H mean on a ceramic coating?
9H is a graphite pencil grade from a coatings laboratory test, not a mineral hardness. Elcometer describes the pencil hardness test, also called the Wolff-Wilborn test, as using the varying hardness values of graphite pencils, where the lowest pencil that marks the film sets the rating. Read August 14, 2026.
Does a ceramic coating stop rock chips?
Rock chips are not what a coating is built to stop, and the company selling both products says so. XPEL states on its FAQ page that paint protection film is generally better for preventing physical damage like scratches and chips due to its thicker, impact-resistant layer, while coating excels at repelling water and contaminants. Read August 14, 2026.
Do you still have to wash a ceramic coated car?
Washing stays mandatory, and the coating maker leads with it. CARPRO opens its CQUARTZ maintenance page with the statement that washing regularly is the most important item, then asks owners to decontaminate the surface with IronX every 3 to 6 months and apply a topper every 3 to 12 months. Read August 14, 2026.
Can you put wax or a sealant on top of a ceramic coating?
Topping a coating is part of the published maintenance plan rather than a workaround. CARPRO instructs owners of a CQUARTZ coated car to use a topper every 3 to 12 months, and lists Reload 2.0, its water-based modified SiO2 spray, at up to 3 months of protection on daily drivers as a stand-alone layer. Read August 14, 2026.
How long does a ceramic coating actually last?
Published durability runs from two years to four, depending on product and layer count. CARPRO lists 2 years for CQUARTZ Lite 2.0 and 2 to 5 years for CQUARTZ UK 3.0. Gyeon USA lists up to 36 months for one layer of Q2 Mohs EVO and up to 48 months for two. Read August 14, 2026.
